4way Consulting were looking to recruit a Technical Director to grow their technology consulting capability. The successful candidate would work closely with National Highways and Local Authorities, advising how digital solutions can be utilised to improve the road network and increase efficiency.
They had never used an executive search firm before and spoke with six executive search firms about delivering this role for them. After several meetings to assess our knowledge of the market, approach, and chemistry with their management team we were selected to undertake the search.
4way Consulting’s core business was coming from engineering & design work for Highways Contractors, National Highways and Local Authorities. So, this candidate was to be responsible for significantly developing the technology consulting business.
To be successful in this role, candidates would need to be technically credible experts in the field of ITS, who were also capable of building strong client relationships. Alongside this, they would also need to be comfortable joining a close-knit management team.
To find technical experts in this space, the research focused on ITS consultancies, management consultancies with a transport technology practice, and transport technology product businesses.
Candidates needed to have experience of leading digital consulting projects within the highways sector, whilst having business development and business strategy responsibilities.
As an area of emerging technology and development, 4Way wanted to find someone that was able to provide innovative solutions for their clients. One of the main challenges we came up against for this role was identifying which candidates had this indepth understanding of innovative digital solutions as opposed to traditional ITS design and engineering.
To uncover this information, interested individuals were approached and assessed across four leadership competencies: building collaboration & partnerships, creativity & innovation, results orientation and developing strategy. This allowed usto provide an interview score based on tangible demonstrable abilities, which alongside a two-page candidate report, gave the client the tools to make an informed decision on who to interview.
As a small consulting business that is competing with large global brands, it wasvital that when approaching candidates, we promoted the advantages of working in a SME consulting business. 4Way are an agile, dynamic business with a fantastic company culture, so focussing on these key selling points was key to securing the best talent.

Seven great candidates were shortlisted for this role and 4way recruited a fantastic candidate withover 21 years’ ITS experience.
