Our client, a leading manufacturer of rail infrastructure products, is seeking a Business Development Director to strengthen its position in the rail sector. The organisation delivers innovative and sustainable solutions to some of the UK and Europe’s most complex transport and infrastructure challenges.
This senior leadership role sits within the commercial leadership team of the rail division and carries responsibility for strategy, new business growth, and profitability in the business. The position focuses on expanding market share for a portfolio of products with rail customers, while also securing opportunities in adjacent markets, delivering margin-accretive revenue growth in line with corporate objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and implement business development strategies to expand market share and deliver profitable growth.
- Prepare go-to-market plans for new customers and target markets.
- Build and sustain strong B2B relationships, often with tier-1 rail contractors and Network Rail, representing the business across the sector with credibility.
- Develop a high-performing business development team.
- Oversee customer engagement, contract renewals, and strategic account planning to ensure service excellence and retention.
- Identify and position the organisation for strategic “must win” opportunities, providing direction to bid activity and wider collaboration.
- Represent the business at conferences, fairs, and industry events.
- Contribute to financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting for sales and margin performance.
Requirements
- Proven experience in senior-level business development, sales, or commercial leadership within infrastructure, engineering, or rail.
- Demonstrated success in delivering profitable account growth and securing new business in competitive markets. Previous experience selling to rail infrastructure contractors or rail infrastructure owners would be preferred.
- Strong commercial and financial acumen with a track record of developing long-term customer relationships.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at a strategic level.
- Experience in leading and developing high-performing teams.
- Strategic mindset with strong planning and execution skills.
- Degree qualified or equivalent; professional qualifications desirable.
- Knowledge of the rail industry and engineering would be advantageous.
