A large infrastructure contracting business is seeking a Commercial Director to join its senior leadership team. Reporting to the Managing Director, this pivotal role carries responsibility for the commercial success and sustainable growth of the business, ensuring effective commercial management across all business units.
Working closely with the Managing Director and Finance Director, you will oversee the full spectrum of commercial activity including business development, work winning, and project delivery, as well as client and subcontractor relationships, procurement, and risk management. The business typically delivers contracts for significant civil engineering and multi-disciplinary construction works with clients across different infrastructure sectors including transport, environment and utilities. This is an outstanding opportunity to influence strategy, drive performance, and provide strong leadership across the commercial function.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver commercial, contractual, and resource management across all business units, ensuring profitability, growth, and alignment with strategic objectives.
- Work with the MD to secure a forward workload plan, manage risk, support bid teams, and maintain effective client relationships to secure framework, negotiated, and repeat opportunities.
- Ensure effective tender handover, oversee margin improvement planning, and review procurement strategies.
- Undertake regular project health checks and business unit CVRs, ensure risk and change are effectively managed, drive cash-positive outcomes, and report to the Board.
- Lead, mentor, and support commercial teams at all levels, embedding succession planning, performance management, and staff development.
- Act as a senior ambassador for the business with clients, supply chain partners, consultants, and at industry events.
- Ensure compliance with delegated authorities, manage disputes, and provide input to financial reporting, forecasts, and insurance matters.
- Champion the company’s values, promote inclusion and diversity, and be an exemplar of safety without compromise.
Requirements
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Building/Construction, or Civil Engineering, with at least 20 years’ experience in the construction industry.
- Strong track record in commercial and contractual leadership at senior level within a significant contracting business or division.
- Proven ability to resolve complex issues, with excellent decision-making and communication skills.
- Demonstrable leadership and coaching ability, with experience managing large teams.
- High-level commercial acumen, with strong financial, contractual, and risk management expertise.
- Ability to drive improvement and change in a large, complex business environment.
- Desirable: Professional accreditation (RICS, CIOB, ICES, or equivalent).
