Here’s a round-up of the latest contracts awarded across the UK infrastructure sector this July.

Water

Anglian Water

Anglian Water has appointed a joint venture of AtkinsRéalis, Mace, and Turner & Townsend as its Programme Delivery Partner (PDP) to support capital investment over the next 15 years.

The £1bn agreement runs from AMP8 through to the end of AMP10 in 2040, covering the full scope of Anglian Water’s investment programme. It begins with the company’s largest-ever business plan, AMP8, worth £11 billion and running until 2030.


The PDP will support major projects, including two new reservoirs in the Fens and Lincolnshire, with a focus on delivering long-term value for customers and the environment.

  

Portsmouth Water

Portsmouth Water has awarded a combined £136.5m worth of AMP8 contracts to Cappagh, commencing on 1 August 2025 and running through to 2030 (with a possible extension into AMP9), to oversee smart water meter rollout and essential network improvements.

 

Severn Trent Water

Severn Trent Water has launched preliminary market engagement for its proposed £200m Strategic Resource Option (SRO) at Minworth, part of a joint Grand Union Canal transfer scheme with Affinity Water and the Canal & River Trust. The engagement period runs until 1 August 2025.

  

Kier has secured a £139m contract from Severn Trent to upgrade the Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works in Leicestershire.

The project starts in summer 2025 and is planned to be completed in 2028. The scheme follows a successful early contractor involvement phase where Kier led enabling works and design development.

Thames Water

Thames Water has appointed a joint venture between Stantec and AtkinsRealis to act as technical delivery partner for its Severn-to-Thames Transfer project.

The JV will support the development of design options to transfer water from the River Severn to the Thames as part of Thames Water’s draft Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP24).

 

Rail

Transport for London

TfL has launched procurement for a new infrastructure improvement framework worth up to £700m, covering civils, M&E, and major Tube station upgrades across London. Four contractors will be selected to deliver flagship schemes – including the £80m South Kensington upgrade, £60m Elephant & Castle works and around £200m of step-free access packages, via NEC multi-stage contracts with early contractor involvement.

The framework is set to span four years. Awards are expected by 1 December 2025, ahead of the framework’s commencement on 8 December 2025. Interested firms should submit responses by 30 September 2025.

Transport for London has signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement with EDF Renewables UK, via its subsidiary Longfield Solar Energy Farm Limited, to supply solar electricity to the London Underground.

Construction of the Essex-based solar farm will begin in 2026, with the site expected to deliver around 80 GWh of electricity annually to TfL - enough to power over 29,000 homes. This deal marks a significant milestone in TfL’s ambition to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

 

Iarnród Éireann

Jacobs has been appointed by Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) to provide multi-disciplinary consultancy services for the modernisation and expansion of critical 87-mile (140km) rail corridor in Ireland.

Jacobs will support the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and preferred option selection phases over an initial four-year period, with the possibility of a four-year extension.

 

St Pancras International

Hawkins Brown has been appointed to lead the design and feasibility study for the planned expansion of St Pancras International’s Eurostar terminal, aiming to double station capacity.

The three-stage plan will initially focus on boosting hourly capacity by 2,700 through improvements to security and border processes. Later phases will improve connectivity between the international area and main concourse by 2028, and explore further expansion options in the 2030s, including relocating arrivals processing.  

 

Platinum Paddington

Mace has been awarded the Paddington Overstation Development by Platinum Paddington, a joint venture between Helical and TfL’s property arm, Places for London.

The contract is valued between £180m and £200m; construction is set to being in early 2026.

 

Arriva

Arriva Group has signed a €300m contract with Škoda to supply 22 next-generation electric trains for Czechia.

Arriva’s investment follows the award of a 15-year, €750m contract by the Czech Ministry of Transport last month to operate long-distance rail services connecting Prague, Pilsen, and Western Bohemia.

The new trains will be in operation from December 2028.

 

Breedon Group

Breedon Group has awarded Freightliner two five-year heavy-haul rail contracts. One renews their long-standing cement transport agreement, while the other introduces a new aggregates haulage service covering sites across the UK.

 

SYMCA

SYMCA has awarded Hitachi Rail a 15-year Technology Partner Framework Agreement to modernise the South Yorkshire Supertram network.

Under the deal, Hitachi Rail will renew core tram systems with digitally enabled technologies to enhance operational performance and passenger experience.

Highways

National Highways

National Highways has awarded Skanska a £153m contract to upgrade the A47/A11 Thickthorn junction south of Norwich. The scheme will deliver two new link roads and a series of structures to increase capacity and reduce congestion.

Enabling works are underway and construction is due to begin in early 2026, with the junction expected to open to traffic in 2028-29.

 

Transport Scotland

Transport Scotland has awarded Wills Bros Civil Engineering a £152.7m contract to deliver the next phase of the A9 Dualling Programme, upgrading approximately 5 miles (8.2km) between Tay Crossing and Ballinluig in Perthshire, Scotland.

Enabling works are already underway, with main construction expected to start in early 2026 and the route scheduled to open by the end of 2028

 

Bristol City Council

Bristol City Council has awarded a £288m Highways Asset Management and Civils Framework to 27 contractors, covering a four-year programme from October 2025 to September 2029.

The framework is divided into ten lots, addressing everything from machine-laid surfacing and micro-asphalting to geotechnical works, bridge repairs, traffic management, and major highway civil engineering.

Transport

UK Government

The UK Government has unveiled a £92.8bn transport upgrade programme covering more than 50 rail and road projects across England and Wales, much of this programme is previously announced schemes.

This package includes around £24bn for strategic road schemes like the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route, the M54-M6 link road, and the A46 Newark bypass.

Major rail initiatives include funding for the Midlands Rail Hub and three new train stations, benefitting millions of commuters.

Nuclear

Sizewell C

The UK Government has confirmed the final investment decision to proceed with the £38bn Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk.

The government will take a 44.9% equity stake, making it the largest stakeholder. Other shareholders include La Caisse (20%), Centrica (15%), Amber Infrastructure (7.6%) and EDF (12.5%)

Last month, a delivery partnership with Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Bouygues Travaux Publics was formed to carry out civil engineering work.

Construction is planned to start in 2026 and continue into the 2030s.

 

Great British Energy – Nuclear

Following the decision last month to support the Rolls-Royce SMR consortium to design and build SMRs, Great British Energy selected a consortium led by Turner & Townsend, in partnership with WSP and NUVIA UK, to provide advisory support for the UK’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme.

The initial contract is for one year, with an option to extend for another year.

 

EDF Nuclear Operations

EDF Nuclear Operations has awarded a facilities management contract worth over £200m to Dalkia UK, covering non-nuclear support services at eight operational nuclear power stations, including sites such as Dungeness B, Hartlepool, Heysham 1 & 2, Hinkley Point B, Hunterston B, Sizewell B and Torness.

Oil & Gas

INEOS FPS

Costain has been awarded a multi-million-pound contract from INEOS FPS to provide engineering services at the Kinneil Terminal near Grangemouth.


The three-year agreement will see Costain deliver engineering design and optimisation support aimed at improving safety, efficiency, reliability, and resilience at the terminal, which plays a critical role in the Forties Pipeline System.

Other

Amazon

Amazon has announced plans to invest £40bn in the UK over the next three years, aimed at significantly expanding its logistics infrastructure. The investment includes the construction of four new fulfilment centres, notably in Hull, Northampton, and the East Midlands, plus upgrades to over 100 existing logistics sites and the addition of new delivery stations.

Welcomed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as “massive vote of confidence” in the UK’s business environment, this commitment represents one of Amazon’s largest-ever country-specific investments.
