National Grid has appointed 13 contractors to a major substation construction framework supporting its UK electricity network upgrade programme.
The framework covers EPC substations, M&E installations and major civils projects above £5m, supporting electricity network upgrades and renewable energy connections across the UK.
The successful firms are BAM Nuttall, Costain, Laing O’Rourke, Siemens Energy, Skanska, Kirby Group Engineering, Morson Projects, OCU Utility Services, Alpha Construction, Amalgamated Construction, Costain, Galliford Try, Trant Engineering, and Tudorborn.

Jacobs has secured an eight-year framework with Murphy to support SSEN Transmission infrastructure projects across Scotland.
This is a long-term agreement where Jacobs will provide engineering, environmental, geotechnical and high-voltage electrical design services for substations, grid connections and renewable energy infrastructure as part of wider electricity network upgrades.
Sizewell C has awarded a £70m contract to Kier to deliver the main entrance plaza for the new Suffolk nuclear power station.
The project includes construction of security, access and operational facilities that will serve as the primary gateway to the site during the wider nuclear plant delivery programme.
The GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme) Agency has awarded Edgewing a £686m contract to advance design and development work for the next-generation combat aircraft under the Global Combat Air Programme.
Edgewing is a joint venture between BAE Systems, Leonardo and JAIEC, and will act as design authority for the aircraft throughout its lifecycle, supporting engineering, systems integration and delivery activities ahead of planned entry into service in 2035.
Babcock has secured a two-year extension to its Future Maritime Support Programme contract with the UK Ministry of Defence to continue supporting Royal Navy ships and submarines.
The extension will see Babcock provide engineering, maintenance and through-life support services across the naval fleet, sustaining critical maritime capability and thousands of UK defence jobs.
WSP will continue as National Highways’ lead technical partner for its Water Quality Plan, supported by Mott MacDonald, Ramboll, Arup and AECOM. The programme aims to address the Strategic Road Network’s most significant road run-off pollution sources by 2030.
Birmingham City Council has appointed four contractors to a £200m framework covering transport and infrastructure works across the city – AtkinsRéalis, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, and Pell Frischmann Consultants.
The framework includes drainage and surface works, street-lighting maintenance, traffic control services, highways engineering and infrastructure consultancy, alongside structural engineering, urban planning, air quality management and wider design services supporting Birmingham’s regeneration and connectivity programmes.
The contract is estimated to run for eight years, commencing on the 1st of June 2026.
M Group has secured a £99m contract with Transport for London to maintain and refurbish bridges and other highway structures across the capital.
The agreement covers inspection, repair and strengthening works aimed at extending asset life and supporting the long-term resilience of London’s transport infrastructure.

Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) and Translink have awarded Stadler a €698m (£548m) contract to design, build and support a new Enterprise fleet for the Belfast–Dublin route.
The deal covers eight tri-mode intercity trains based on Stadler’s FLIRT platform, alongside associated infrastructure works, with entry into passenger service planned for 2030 following testing and commissioning. The programme is jointly funded by the Irish and Northern Irish governments, with €165m support from the EU PEACEPLUS programme.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), on behalf of MetroLink, has launched procurement for the €7.3bn M500 Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Maintain PPP contract for Dublin’s MetroLink project.
The contract covers rolling stock, signalling, track, power, depot facilities, station fit-outs and operation and maintenance of the metro for 25 years, with a total contract term of around 32 years including construction. Major civils, tunnelling and enabling works are being procured separately.
The Gateway Development Commission has awarded a US$1.29bn (£970m) contract to a Skanska-led joint venture for the Manhattan Tunnel Project on the Hudson River rail scheme between New York and New Jersey.
The contract covers construction of a section of the new Hudson Tunnel as part of the wider programme to expand passenger rail capacity beneath the Hudson River.
Gamuda has appointed a Jacobs, GHD and WSP joint venture to design five underground stations for the Sydney Metro West project in Australia.
The contract covers stations at Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays as part of the Stations Package West programme linking Greater Parramatta with central Sydney.
The value of the projects was not disclosed by the firms.
Metrolinx has awarded the first construction package for the Hamilton Light Rail Transit project in Ontario, Canada to the Hamilton Transit Alliance, led by Aecon Infrastructure, with support from Hatch, Egis, and Systra.
The contract covers early works and infrastructure activities ahead of the main delivery phase for the 14km light rail route, which will connect key destinations across Hamilton through 17 planned stops.
Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority has approved the new Dubai Metro Gold Line project, a major underground expansion linking key residential and commercial districts across the city.
VINCI Construction Grands Projets has secured a €192m (£164m) contract to modernise Prague’s main wastewater treatment plant on behalf of Prague Water Management Company (Pražská vodohospodářská společnos).
The project will upgrade sludge treatment and energy recovery facilities, including new digestion and biogas systems, to improve environmental performance and support the plant’s long-term operational resilience.
The Port of Dover has appointed 14 contractors to a four-year civil engineering and marine works framework valued at up to £100m.
The framework covers infrastructure, marine, structural and maintenance projects across the port estate.
The successful firms are Associated Asphalt Contracting, Blu-3, Concrete Repairs, Costain, CPE Projects, FM Conway, Jackson Civil Engineering, Knights Brown, McLaughlin & Harvey, M Group Transport, Mitie, REDEC Refurbishment, UK Power Networks Services, and Walker Construction.

The Government Commercial Agency has awarded a £3.5bn framework for construction professional services covering defence, nuclear, infrastructure, flood risk and asset management projects across the UK and overseas territories.
One supplier was appointed to each of 11 lots, but the winners have been withheld under Section 94 of the Procurement Act 2023 on national security and commercial sensitivity grounds. We will report on the appointed companies when publicly available.
The framework will support central government and wider public sector bodies across the full lifecycle of construction projects.
A joint venture between developer SEGRO and Pure Data Centres has secured planning approval for a £1bn hyperscale data centre campus in Park Royal, West London.
The scheme will deliver up to 56MW of IT capacity across two data centre buildings, alongside energy infrastructure and heat reuse measures, with construction expected to support hundreds of jobs during delivery.
